Report: Nonlawyer Navigators in State Courts: An Emerging Consensus (McClymont 2019)
This report provides a survey of the national landscape of nonlawyer navigator programs in state courts assisting self-represented litigants. It includes an analysis of 23 programs in 15 states and the District of Columbia. It is based on extensive outreach and interviews with more than 60 informants who created, oversee or manage nonlawyer navigator programs in court settings. The report describes program features and offers practical considerations for creating and implementing such programs.

Open to the Public – 2024 How Law Libraries are Serving Self-Represented Litigants Across the Country
The Law Librarians’ Working Group of the Self-Represented Litigation Network with the American Association of Law Libraries Government Law Libraries Special Interest Section Best A2J Practices Committee surveyed law libraries about their services to the self-represented litigant, including self-help programs. Results are displayed in this Story Map. This research and analysis was developed to expand SRL services among law libraries by demonstrating best practices for assisting SRLs.

In our November 2022 webinar, we were able to hear from Sarah Song, Supervising Senior Program Manager of the Access to Justice Division at the Administrative Office of Illinois Courts about some of the limitations to technology advancements in the courts that point to the continued need for human-based assistance for self-represented litigants. Magistrate Gene Edwards of the Franklin County Municipal Court also spoke to us on finding out how to get the judiciary involved and benefits of navigator programs from the perspective of the bench.
