This report is intended to help access to justice commissions take advantage of the high visibility of the commission movement and the many successful commission initiatives across the country. By leveraging this general level of support into ongoing stability for an individual commission, commission members can develop a strong, stable infrastructure, with professional staff, allowing them to focus all their energy on the pursuit of their civil justice mission.

Many organizations have experience with business process analysis (BPA), a method to analyze a company’s processes and improve the efficiency and effectiveness of its operations. In fact, there are multiple methodologies used to accomplish the goals of BPA. A notable one is the Toyota Production System (TPS). TPS was established based on several principles and concepts, including a customer-first culture, an acknowledgment that team members are the most important resource, continuous improvement, a go-and-see approach, jidoka, and just-in-time.

Report: Sargent Shriver Civil Counsel Act: Report to the Legislature (Judicial Council of California 2020)
On Monday July 13, 2020 at noon eastern, the SRLN Research Working Group hosted a presentation by Bonnie Hough of the California Judicial Council and Kelly Jarvis of NPC Research who reported on the major, multi-year research produced as a result of the California Sargent Shriver Civil Counsel Act. Commencing in fiscal year 2011–12, the legislation funded research and legal representation in housing, child custody disputes, domestic violence, a guardianship/conservatorship.

Survey: SRLN Tiers of Service Survey Tool (SRLN 2015)
The SRLN Tiers Survey was developed for states to conduct a quick tiered inventory of their court based self-help services. Tier 1 services are asynchronous (one-way), Tier 2 services are synchronous (two-way), and Tier 3 services integrate multiple providers or parts of the system.

The Illinois Supreme Court Commission on Access to Justice has started using the SRLN demographics maps for presentations to circuit clerks, circuit court judges, civil legal aid and pro bono practitioners. “The maps helped provide context for why access to justice is so necessary by broadening our scope of focus onto statewide demographics,” states Danielle Hirsch, Assistant Director of the Civil Justice Division of Administrative Office of the Illinois Courts.
SRLN Brief: Intro to Design Thinking (SRLN 2017)
In the Access to Justice space, design thinking practices from the technology space are increasingly embraced to improve the way people access legal services and to improve and simplify the processes themselves. Reviewing practices around the country, we see that sustainable innovation in the access to justice space happens when design thinking is adopted and implemented in our core practices, and when that happens we can effectively identify where technology can offer scalable, sustainable and accessible resources.
