SRLN COVID-19 Best Practice Tip: Produce Plain Language and Accessible Court Administrative Orders (News 2020)
As COVID-19 continues to impact court operations, courts must produce easy to understand and accessible translations of court administrative orders in order to ensure court processes remain inclusive of all court users. SRLs, the predominant user group in the civil courts, can not easily navigate procedural requirements through legalese heavy orders alone. Court policies should be translated into plain language (at a maximum of a fifth-grade reading level) and relevant non-English languages. If video is used, it should be captioned to be accessible to the hearing impaired.

Reaching SRLs During COVID: Outreach Campaigns Leverage Social Media, Ad Spots, and Traditional Print to Ensure SRLs Know Self-Help Support Is Still Available (News 2021)
With in-person support for SRLs limited or halted due to COVID, a significant number of self-help services are continuing to serve the public even when their court might be closed. The challenge in this circumstance becomes how to tell the public that self-help is available when the court says it’s closed.  Outreach strategies are particularly critical at a time when more people than ever find themselves in need of legal guidance on COVID related issues ranging from tenants’ rights to unemployment law.

Report: Comparing Online Legal Content Formats: The Results of User Research (Rae & Quinn 2018)
In May 2018, the Florida Justice Technology Center’s FloridaLawHelp.org website conducted short user tests of the same legal content in four different formats with 26 Floridians, the majority of whom (over 80%) reported earning less than 250% of the federal poverty level. Legal information, covering eligibility criteria for Florida’s Extended Foster Care program, was presented in flowchart, video, short narrative, and Frequently Asked Questions formats.
